00;00;17;27 – 00;00;27;27
Christi
Welcome back, everybody to the Dodge Movie Podcast. This is episode 176, and we are going to talk about the 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada.
00;00;27;29 – 00;00;49;28
Mike
The thing that I like about us doing this is I had on streaming, went to watch the second part of Disney’s Dune series, and right beneath it, because it’s the DS was Devil Wears Prada. So I watched this less a week before we watched it for the podcast. I watched it on my own, so I have seen a lot of The Devil Wears Prada.
00;00;49;28 – 00;00;55;03
Christi
You are a good podcaster because you came so prepared,
00;00;55;06 – 00;00;56;17
Mike
Yes, doubly prepared.
00;00;56;17 – 00;01;13;12
Christi
Yes. So we watch Devil Wears Prada on Max and Mike. Watch it twice. I’m mad. The director is David Frankel, who did 2001, Band of Brothers, 2008 Marley and Me and 2022s. Jerry and Marge go large. Did you watch out or did it just I watch it?
00;01;13;15 – 00;01;22;06
Mike
I wanted to, but I haven’t seen during it. Marge, it’s so good. I highly recommend it. And so next time I’m out of town or something, you need to watch it.
00;01;22;06 – 00;01;25;07
Mike
It’s on Max. By the way, I actually, I think I should,
00;01;25;07 – 00;01;31;08
Mike
double feature that. Watch first. Jerry and Marge go large, followed by Bank of Dave.
00;01;31;10 – 00;01;47;04
Christi
Oh, is it available? Yeah, it’s a streamer. Okay. He just sent me the trailer today, so I didn’t know if it was coming in. Very similar, but also mostly in the tone. The tone is positive and uplifting. I have to watch Bank of Dave with mom next week. Okay.
00;01;47;04 – 00;01;52;14
Christi
it stars Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci, and Simon Baker.
00;01;52;17 – 00;01;58;04
Christi
The DP is Florian Bartel, Josh. It,
00;01;58;04 – 00;02;09;27
Christi
And he was the DP on 1997 Men in Black 98 Godzilla and 28 teens I feel pretty, the one with Amy Schumer.
00;02;09;27 – 00;02;10;22
Christi
right.
00;02;10;22 – 00;02;17;12
Christi
the writer is Aline Brosh McKenna, who brought us 27 dresses. Another fave of ours.
00;02;17;12 – 00;02;20;22
Christi
we bought a zoo. And Cruella.
00;02;20;24 – 00;02;24;29
Mike
Didn’t she also write on like crazy Ex-Girlfriend or New Girl?
00;02;24;29 – 00;02;26;00
Christi
I believe so.
00;02;26;03 – 00;02;27;26
Christi
Yeah, I do believe so.
00;02;27;26 – 00;02;30;26
Christi
Laura Weiss Weisberger,
00;02;30;26 – 00;02;33;08
Christi
wrote the novel that this film,
00;02;33;08 – 00;02;38;15
Christi
is adapted from. Right, right. And let me see if there’s. So,
00;02;38;15 – 00;02;55;09
Christi
the filming locations are in New York and Paris, and the synopsis for this film is a smart but sensible new graduate lands a job as an assistant to Miranda Priestly, the demanding editor in chief of High of a high fashion magazine, and the tagline the one and only.
00;02;55;09 – 00;02;59;15
Christi
And I believe it’s the oh wait, no. There’s three taglines.
00;02;59;15 – 00;03;09;22
Christi
Helen, heels is the first. Okay, I like it. Me, Andy Sachs, a million girls would kill to have her job. She’s not one of them.
00;03;09;22 – 00;03;19;23
Christi
will. Too wordy. Yeah. And high fashion, low cunning. And a boss from hell. Okay, that was good. With high fashion and low cunning.
00;03;19;23 – 00;03;23;02
Mike
I don’t think we needed the boss from hell part.
00;03;23;05 – 00;03;35;28
Christi
The trivia for this is Anna Wintour. The editor of Vogue is largely the inspiration for Miranda Priestly, and she was not invited to the premiere. She did, however, attend an advanced screening for the,
00;03;35;28 – 00;03;36;23
Christi
film
00;03;36;23 – 00;03;48;06
Christi
with the press, along with her daughter dressed head to toe in Prada, and her daughter could be heard nudging her throughout the screening, saying, they got that right.
00;03;48;08 – 00;03;54;21
Christi
Although never commenting on it publicly, she reportedly liked the film despite its initial,
00;03;54;21 – 00;03;59;00
Christi
skepticism. So kick us off with your pick up line and tell me,
00;03;59;00 – 00;04;00;27
Christi
about what kicked off,
00;04;00;27 – 00;04;02;29
Christi
Devil Wears Prada
00;04;03;02 – 00;04;05;24
Mike
pick up line is good luck. Bye, Nate.
00;04;06;20 – 00;04;09;23
Christi
Oh, that’s so on the nose. Very.
00;04;09;26 – 00;04;11;27
Mike
Yeah, I think so. I think so,
00;04;11;27 – 00;04;16;14
Mike
that’s the whole point of this is is Andy’s going to need good luck to get through this.
00;04;16;20 – 00;04;17;00
Mike
Yeah.
00;04;17;00 – 00;04;27;00
Mike
so Nate is her boyfriend played by a person I think was a bigger name back then. Adrian Grenier. He was on entourage. It may have finished by then, but he is big name.
00;04;27;00 – 00;04;29;05
Mike
didn’t like him in the role. Couldn’t stand him.
00;04;29;05 – 00;04;36;28
Mike
so I don’t know if I don’t like his work in general because his character on, you know, entourage is in him as a person, of course.
00;04;37;00 – 00;04;40;00
Mike
or if it just didn’t seem like a good match.
00;04;40;02 – 00;04;46;24
Christi
I can’t remember what it was, but I saw him on some kind of a reality show.
00;04;46;24 – 00;04;52;29
Christi
Yeah. I don’t, I don’t know what it was but he did not come off. Well.
00;04;53;02 – 00;04;53;21
Mike
Yeah.
00;04;53;21 – 00;05;05;21
Mike
Simon Baker plays kind of the lothario bad guy love interest person. And I like him better even though they have him wearing a scarf.
00;05;05;24 – 00;05;11;26
Mike
which generally I mean, it kind of says he’s a douche if he’s wearing a scarf. But far more importantly…
00;05;11;27 – 00;05;15;08
Christi
you mean when it’s not cold outside?
00;05;15;11 – 00;05;25;13
Mike
Yeah, that character Christian says if it weren’t for the boyfriend, and if he was a real writer, he wouldn’t use the subjunctive. That was a big, big flaw right there. He got to talk to.
00;05;25;16 – 00;05;29;04
Mike
I don’t know if if Baker just missed delivered the line or what.
00;05;29;04 – 00;05;33;29
Mike
maybe Ilene can call in and give us some insight into that one.
00;05;34;01 – 00;05;37;11
Christi
What about the cinematography for this film? Was there anything that stood out for you?
00;05;37;15 – 00;05;40;29
Mike
Well, we start out with a montage
00;05;40;29 – 00;05;45;12
Mike
of the fashionistas getting ready, and it was cleverly done because,
00;05;45;12 – 00;05;51;27
Mike
we think that it’s Andy getting ready in the sexy lingerie, but it turns out it’s not
00;05;52;02 – 00;05;55;29
Christi
Don’t they intersperse her those so that sometimes we think it might be her.
00;05;56;01 – 00;05;58;04
Mike
Yeah, we do, until the very end.
00;05;58;04 – 00;05;58;24
Mike
there’s,
00;05;58;24 – 00;06;07;29
Mike
a shot that they repeat with walking from the curb to the building, right. For both Andy and Miranda, which is Nate at the dinner with friends with,
00;06;07;29 – 00;06;11;11
Mike
what’s his name? Summer. The guy that was on Mad Men.
00;06;11;11 – 00;06;12;21
Mike
oh. I know who you’re talking about.
00;06;12;23 – 00;06;15;25
Mike
I’m sorry for that actor. He does good work, but anyway,
00;06;15;25 – 00;06;32;05
Mike
they circle the table a la passenger 57. Oh, my goodness, you love it when they do a circular dolly shot. I mean, love is maybe a strong word there. they have another another montage,
00;06;32;05 – 00;06;42;01
Mike
of Andy dressing like a fashionista. Later in the film, there’s a great dolly in on Miranda in her office, and then Dolly out so that Dolly work here.
00;06;42;03 – 00;06;47;28
Mike
they threw in an extreme close up of the doorknob to Randy’s townhouse, and,
00;06;47;28 – 00;06;55;08
Mike
all I think is this the light in the ceiling that they had no way to get from one chair to the other may through it. And it did. It didn’t really a to me, it was weird.
00;06;55;08 – 00;06;59;07
Mike
but then there’s a Paris fashion show montage montage.
00;06;59;10 – 00;07;02;25
Mike
And I thought this was really good at the end. The last kind of I mean,
00;07;02;25 – 00;07;05;25
Mike
I don’t think it’s a got last shot for the last scene.
00;07;05;25 – 00;07;09;07
Mike
it mirrors both Miranda and Andy, and,
00;07;09;07 – 00;07;17;12
Mike
because Andy’s on the other side of the street, and and so I thought that was really nice visual storytelling to to bookend it into show.
00;07;17;14 – 00;07;23;22
Mike
that kind of Andy has become her own. Miranda. Right. So. And that that it was shot very well.
00;07;23;22 – 00;07;30;15
Mike
and so for a film like this, which I would consider romantic comedy ish. Right.
00;07;30;15 – 00;07;33;11
Mike
it is, but there’s also themes of kind of,
00;07;33;11 – 00;07;37;17
Mike
what is important to you. Right. And,
00;07;37;17 – 00;07;42;00
Mike
yeah, it’s a bit I think it’s a bit more a young person finding their way in the world.
00;07;42;02 – 00;07;44;19
Mike
But anyway, it’s just stylistically,
00;07;44;19 – 00;07;46;04
Mike
they went with,
00;07;46;04 – 00;07;54;27
Mike
a pretty saturated, pretty well lit, pretty standard glossy kind of look. But that makes sense for a film about fashion. You’re going to want,
00;07;54;27 – 00;07;57;03
Mike
all the clothes you spent money on.
00;07;57;03 – 00;08;01;19
Mike
and in fact, I think there’s some trivia you’ll get to about how much money they spent on that.
00;08;01;23 – 00;08;07;15
Mike
So you’re going to want those two to really be the star of the shot. So. And that is good. Good cinematography. Yeah.
00;08;07;16 – 00;08;10;01
Christi
Quickly. I think one of us identified,
00;08;10;01 – 00;08;18;16
Christi
she was given an outfit by Stanley Tucci’s character. and so it made sense why she would have that one outfit. And,
00;08;18;16 – 00;08;22;26
Christi
are we to presume that he was lending her a ton of other outfits?
00;08;22;26 – 00;08;29;12
Christi
I don’t think that would be the case. I don’t think, you know, the assistant, the two would,
00;08;29;12 – 00;08;50;04
Christi
maybe you’d be loaned a dress for a big event so you don’t embarrass your boss, right? But I don’t think daily you would be given outfits, and she just was. Especially coats. Coats are so expensive. Designer coats. And she had a new, like, a green, like a Kelly green coat, and then a blue coat, and then a black coat and then a pink coat.
00;08;50;09 – 00;09;01;19
Mike
I think when they’re shooting them, the clothes are on track. Just out of frame of the photographer, and they put them on and put them back to let her leave the building. Like this. Imagine what could happen to that coat.
00;09;01;20 – 00;09;07;09
Christi
She was doing multiple coffee runs where she was crying like four and eight cups of coffee. There’s no way you let her out of the building went up.
00;09;07;10 – 00;09;15;22
Mike
I think you put her in an orange jumpsuit from, like, Sheriff Joe from Arizona. That’s what you send her in to get coffee in New York,
00;09;15;22 – 00;09;20;16
Christi
Right? What did you think of Andy’s character development over the course of the movie?
00;09;20;18 – 00;09;21;10
Mike
Well,
00;09;21;10 – 00;09;23;10
Mike
I you know, it’s hard because,
00;09;23;10 – 00;09;25;18
Mike
I think we’re supposed to to,
00;09;25;18 – 00;09;28;06
Mike
identify with her ambition, and I didn’t actually.
00;09;28;06 – 00;09;34;16
Mike
Really. I thought where she started out was was better than then getting into. And so she says,
00;09;34;16 – 00;09;39;23
Mike
there’s something there’s a line, it’s this or auto universe. I’m like, well, Auto Universe sounds like a much better,
00;09;39;23 – 00;09;41;00
Mike
way to spend your time. I
00;09;41;00 – 00;09;52;09
Christi
I found a deleted scene. She is in the office. You know, there used to be a lot of scenes with, like the.
00;09;52;09 – 00;09;58;22
Christi
And the unemployment office or something. Yeah, yeah. And so the woman says you could be at Vogue, and she’s like,
00;09;58;22 – 00;10;03;19
Christi
no, that’s not really my speed or not. Vogue. They made up a pretend,
00;10;03;19 – 00;10;05;28
Christi
whatever the pretend magazine is. Yeah.
00;10;05;28 – 00;10;12;29
Christi
and the and she said or auto universe. Yeah. And so that’s that. I
00;10;12;29 – 00;10;14;11
Mike
That would have helped
00;10;14;11 – 00;10;16;04
Mike
but to establish.
00;10;16;07 – 00;10;18;22
Mike
But even then, I think she should have gone Auto Universe.
00;10;18;22 – 00;10;32;06
Mike
and, you know, I a little biased. I liked her look with the cable knit sweater and the and the tights in the sensible shoes. I like that she ate bagels. I like first act and just fine. I think that’s a superior thing. And I understand that part of this is that.
00;10;32;08 – 00;10;40;21
Mike
So for for me, that development, I did follow it. I think Hathaway did great in acting. But just I’ll be honest, for me, part of the,
00;10;40;21 – 00;10;46;05
Mike
a hurdle to get over it’s I don’t believe in that fashion world.
00;10;46;05 – 00;10;47;25
Mike
and I think it’s interesting, there’s,
00;10;47;25 – 00;10;49;05
Mike
a bit where,
00;10;49;05 – 00;10;53;25
Mike
Meryl Streep’s character talks about it’s not just blue that’s cerulean.
00;10;53;25 – 00;11;17;27
Mike
And she traces this, this link. And I think the fashion people are like, see, fashion matters into me as like, no, see, you look backwards and found where you found your ideas, but you could have just as easily chosen to go plaid or punk. That’s right. So to me, I understand that there are people who are into fashion like that, but as a viewer I wasn’t.
00;11;17;29 – 00;11;31;16
Mike
So I was pulling for Andy. I think the writing and Hathaway’s performance had me pulling for her, even though there were still kind of this little part of my brain that was like, no, you should just leave. Like, this isn’t worth it.
00;11;31;16 – 00;11;36;02
Mike
and I think Emily Blunt’s character was supposed to show us that,
00;11;36;02 – 00;11;38;08
Mike
there’s a line in there,
00;11;38;08 – 00;11;45;21
Mike
where she says, I’m just one stomach flew away from my goal weight, which is such a hideous concept.
00;11;45;21 – 00;12;08;26
Mike
Right. So I think, you know, and and she’s so harsh and critical and all those things. So it’s to show us why this isn’t a good thing. And I guess maybe we all know people in life. Maybe it’s your kids, maybe it’s a friend who want something that’s bad for them. And so there’s a bit of that difficult to watch as it goes through this.
00;12;08;29 – 00;12;28;09
Mike
and so to me, I liked her development. I think it all made sense. The only downside was at the end, she goes back to her boyfriend, who still played by Adrian Grenier, who I didn’t I just didn’t see the chemistry there. I didn’t I didn’t really enjoy that at all. And in fact, he was a bit of a jerk to her.
00;12;28;11 – 00;12;29;24
Mike
he said something early on,
00;12;29;24 – 00;12;39;29
Mike
about her not looking good, and I was just like, why are you with this guy? So if she’d given him the boot as well as Meryl Streep at that, I could have bought.
00;12;39;29 – 00;12;45;07
Mike
But ultimately, though, I was happy, like all the viewers. I think when we see her,
00;12;45;07 – 00;12;48;07
Mike
on the sidewalk, she’s gotten the job at the,
00;12;48;07 – 00;12;53;25
Mike
highfalutin journalist place, and she sees Miranda, and they have that interaction.
00;12;53;25 – 00;12;58;22
Mike
I definitely I bought that right. They brought me full, circle.
00;12;58;24 – 00;12;59;13
Christi
Yeah.
00;12;59;13 – 00;13;00;18
Christi
despite
00;13;00;18 – 00;13;12;06
Christi
the multiple fashion designer loans that they did get, Patricia Field spent more than $1 million on costuming, making it the most expensive costume film in history.
00;13;12;06 – 00;13;19;18
Christi
and she received her sole Oscar nomination for her work on this film. So I guess it was worth it.
00;13;19;18 – 00;13;23;25
Christi
But wow, $1 million, right?
00;13;23;27 – 00;13;26;20
Mike
You know how many films I could make for that?
00;13;26;20 – 00;13;38;17
Mike
so the question I then have is, where did those clothes go? I mean, I hope they weren’t just, you know, but what do you cut where you take the little hook thing and you take the seams out, you rip the the seams in.
00;13;38;17 – 00;13;41;06
Mike
They just, you know, reuse the cloth or whatever.
00;13;41;06 – 00;14;02;10
Christi
All costumes were sold at an auction for breast cancer research. Anne Hathaway bought the green dress that her character gets to wear. And one item Meryl Streep kept was her sunglasses, which she wore as Donna in the famous many, many, many scene in 2008.
00;14;02;12 – 00;14;03;15
Christi
Mamma mia!
00;14;03;18 – 00;14;16;00
Mike
So credit to Hathaway because I know, well, I’ve heard that many actors depart set with their costumes without asking. So,
00;14;16;00 – 00;14;20;23
Mike
credit to her for throwing some money to breast cancer research. I think this. Yeah.
00;14;20;23 – 00;14;25;13
Mike
I said to a friend of mine, when I watch this, this could be peak Hathaway. This,
00;14;25;13 – 00;14;28;22
Mike
certainly was a highlight of that portion of her career.
00;14;28;26 – 00;14;31;11
Mike
I think this film. Right.
00;14;31;11 – 00;14;32;00
Mike
and,
00;14;32;00 – 00;14;39;21
Mike
I love, just love Stanley Tucci’s turn as the the designer. I think he did a fantastic job in this,
00;14;39;21 – 00;14;41;10
Mike
in particular at the,
00;14;41;10 – 00;14;50;15
Mike
the table at the gala event where he finds out back handedly that he didn’t get the job that Miranda had promised him. That touches acting was fantastic.
00;14;50;23 – 00;14;57;20
Mike
He’s funny. When he needs to be, but it was just so heart wrenching that scene. Great work on his part. Tip of the cap.
00;14;57;22 – 00;15;13;24
Christi
I feel like I saw an interview, but I maybe I’m making this up, so take it for what it’s worth. But I felt like Anne Hathaway did an interview where she said, this is like the third movie where she did a makeover montage.
00;15;13;26 – 00;15;15;21
Christi
So,
00;15;15;21 – 00;15;20;04
Christi
for what it’s worth, the sets, the only contact that production,
00;15;20;04 – 00;15;41;08
Christi
had with Vogue was just gone. Talk gone, gone tour. The production designer who snuck into their offices to get a look at Anna Wintour, his office. He was able to recreate it so authentically. That is said that Anna redecorated hers immediately after the film came out.
00;15;41;10 – 00;15;56;14
Mike
So speaking of sets, two things stuck out to me. One is 2006 is pre iPhone. So there are blackberries everywhere. Yes. And this very much dates it to a very narrow range of years. And the other is
00;15;56;14 – 00;16;05;11
Mike
somebody in production design said we have to quickly visually communicate that we’re in the garment district. So they had a bucket of mannequins.
00;16;05;14 – 00;16;14;16
Mike
The what? Why? Who would have like the the four foot by six foot rolling bucket just filled with mannequins walking down the street?
00;16;14;16 – 00;16;18;03
Mike
the people who were in the mannequin movie. Yes.
00;16;18;03 – 00;16;20;28
Mike
because I believe there were buckets of mannequins there as well.
00;16;21;04 – 00;16;28;10
Christi
So maybe I’m trying to think if I saw a bucket of mannequins, because last time I went in New York, I stayed in the garment district.
00;16;28;12 – 00;16;47;03
Christi
There were tons of boxes, always on the sidewalks. And one night when we were walking home from Broadway after seeing a show, a stack of pallets were on a corner on fire. So I just thought I’d only in New York. Yeah.
00;16;47;05 – 00;16;49;28
Mike
Luckily, the crew of the Long Rewind,
00;16;49;28 – 00;16;56;09
Mike
a sister podcast are in New York, so I will text them and ask them if they’ve seen any buckets of mannequin.
00;16;56;09 – 00;17;05;21
Christi
Keep an eye out for a mannequin bucket. Yeah, yeah, keep an eye up and take a picture so we can add it. Yeah. All right. Anything else you want to talk about?
00;17;05;21 – 00;17;18;21
Mike
I just wanted to mention that there’s. At one point, somebody is wearing a hat that looks left over from Newsies. Like it was this incredibly large, floppy golf caddy hat from 1878.
00;17;18;21 – 00;17;27;15
Mike
It was nuts.
00;17;27;15 – 00;17;36;09
Christi
Did you have anything of this film? I mean, this is a pretty recent film. Is there anything that couldn’t be made today?
00;17;36;11 – 00;17;36;23
Mike
Well,
00;17;36;23 – 00;17;39;22
Mike
there is a whole lot of fat shaming in this film.
00;17;39;24 – 00;17;43;05
Christi
Of course, it’s the fashion industry that’s on brand.
00;17;43;12 – 00;18;03;04
Mike
It may be accurate, but this is an interesting question. If you were to make a film about a lighthearted comedy about the fashion industry today, could you go as hard as they do in this? I mean, they really go after Anne Hathaway, who is very thin in this film. Extremely.
00;18;03;06 – 00;18;17;29
Christi
Although I think I, I don’t know if I wrote it down, but she lost weight. She did the trivia says she did lose some weight over the casting or the the production, but even then, she’s a very pretty, slender gal. So,
00;18;17;29 – 00;18;22;19
Christi
I just I noticed that it was kind of probably accurate, but pretty harsh.
00;18;22;19 – 00;18;23;16
Christi
Yeah. Pretty rough.
00;18;23;16 – 00;18;25;22
Christi
All right. Any head trauma? so
00;18;25;22 – 00;18;43;10
Mike
Andy slammed the cab door on her dad’s head, which is always nice. And then Emily gets hit by a taxi. She does a nice hood roll. I didn’t pause it. I’m going to go ahead and say that probably wasn’t Emily Blunt. They probably got a stunt person, but credit to whomever did that stunt.
00;18;43;12 – 00;18;49;15
Christi
I do believe this is her first film, though, so maybe they weren’t protecting the talent as well. No, I’m just kidding. I’m sure it was this.
00;18;49;17 – 00;19;01;10
Mike
Yeah, this film. It made. I don’t know if it’s your first credit or not, but this is what introduced the world to Emily Blunt, and I find that interesting because her work since then has really been much different.
00;19;01;12 – 00;19;03;02
Mike
She doesn’t really have a,
00;19;03;03 – 00;19;15;00
Mike
kind of a reputation or a body of work that is about fashion or being a pretty mean girl. So, you know, a bit of a of a range there, but also. Wow, isn’t that fascinating how,
00;19;15;00 – 00;19;15;25
Mike
you never know,
00;19;15;25 – 00;19;18;27
Mike
right? looking back, we say, oh, that’s Emily Blunt.
00;19;18;27 – 00;19;29;03
Christi
But it’s interesting because the way that iconography works kind of in reverse is I adore her as a person as well as an actor.
00;19;29;05 – 00;19;33;24
Christi
And I saw her as, oh, she’s just,
00;19;33;24 – 00;19;50;20
Christi
Andy. But like a year or a year later, right? Yeah. So I didn’t see her as much a mean girl, even though there is a point. When is it Heidi Klum or. No, it’s not Heidi Klum. It’s, Giselle comes in and they kind of mean girl. They gang up on the and kind of say something mean.
00;19;50;20 – 00;19;58;11
Christi
That’s true. Other than that, she’s kind of barking at her just because she is so stressed out because she’s under the gun.
00;19;58;11 – 00;19;59;23
Mike
Yeah. I think,
00;19;59;23 – 00;20;08;16
Mike
in, in the, in the film that narratively she shows us the other path that Andy could have gone down. Right.
00;20;08;16 – 00;20;15;12
Mike
and so, yeah, she’s a likable character. But you know what I’m saying, though, she’s in other films, she just plays a lot of very different roles.
00;20;15;15 – 00;20;33;24
Mike
In particular, I’m thinking of the latest film, The Fall Guy, where she plays a director. And so that’s such a different, you know, she’s kind of like the Anna Wintour character in a sense that she’s at the top of the org chart then. So it’s just I thought is interesting, you know, you never know. And people get started that what’s the old thing?
00;20;33;24 – 00;20;44;17
Mike
There’s no small roles, just small actors, you know? Wow. Just the people that that I guess, you know, like Jerry Seinfeld said, if you have the talent, you know, you rise will find you eventually.
00;20;44;22 – 00;20;46;27
Christi
Yeah. She’s amazing. All right,
00;20;46;27 – 00;20;50;11
Christi
let’s see. As a smoochy. Is there a love story?
00;20;50;13 – 00;20;51;26
Mike
Smoochy, smoochy?
00;20;51;26 – 00;20;53;00
Mike
there is actually,
00;20;53;00 – 00;20;53;14
Mike
So,
00;20;53;14 – 00;20;54;24
Mike
Nate. Andy kiss.
00;20;54;24 – 00;20;59;12
Mike
before going into the bedroom for presumably the Humpty Hump. And then,
00;20;59;12 – 00;21;05;00
Mike
Christian, played by Simon Baker, kisses Andy in Paris. So she gets a couple different guys this moocher. Way to go, Andy.
00;21;05;01 – 00;21;08;14
Christi
Nice drive movie.
00;21;08;17 – 00;21;09;06
Mike
and,
00;21;09;06 – 00;21;14;13
Mike
so there’s really only two cars that feature anything in here, right? One is,
00;21;14;13 – 00;21;18;07
Mike
silver 2006 911 Carrera S Cabrio.
00;21;18;10 – 00;21;20;10
Mike
This shows that Miranda follows,
00;21;20;10 – 00;21;28;05
Mike
appearance and not function because there’s no reason to have a 911 in New York City. You will never get out of first gear.
00;21;28;05 – 00;21;37;29
Mike
and there’s even a part there. Were Andy supposed to take it to get the brakes checked? No, the brakes would be pristine. You’re never going to go fast. You’re just not going to break those brakes.
00;21;37;29 – 00;21;39;07
Mike
It lasts for ten years.
00;21;39;07 – 00;21;39;28
Mike
so
00;21;40;00 – 00;21;43;11
Christi
you use your brakes a lot because pedestrians walk in front of you.
00;21;43;14 – 00;21;46;20
Mike
Yeah, but you’re not going that fast. You’re just idling.
00;21;46;20 – 00;21;47;03
Mike
and,
00;21;47;03 – 00;21;48;05
Mike
the other is there’s,
00;21;48;05 – 00;21;52;21
Mike
black 2006 Mercedes S-Class. There’s also shows that,
00;21;52;21 – 00;21;56;23
Mike
she follows fashion because it’s a brand new car. She has to have a brand new,
00;21;56;23 – 00;21;57;13
Mike
and
00;21;57;13 – 00;22;08;23
Mike
interestingly enough, that was a prototype of an upcoming model, which allowed them to cut it in half so that they could get the shots of Andy and Miranda in the back seat.
00;22;08;26 – 00;22;19;27
Mike
which is an interesting way to do that. I think now, because we have smaller cameras, maybe they wouldn’t have to do that, but in 2006, cut it in half so you can film it.
00;22;19;29 – 00;22;21;06
Christi
Shall we go to the numbers.
00;22;21;06 – 00;22;22;01
Mike
Let’s go to the numbers.
00;22;22;02 – 00;22;26;25
Christi
Only two days of the production took place in Paris. It was too expensive for flying Meryl Streep to Europe.
00;22;26;25 – 00;22;52;05
Christi
So her scenes were shot in the US. And Meryl Streep almost left production during the early stages due to her dissatisfaction with her salary. The scene where Andy missed Nate’s birthday and comes in with a cupcake was originally going to be that they were all going to a concert, and she shows up late, but it was too expensive and the studio needs cut.
00;22;52;08 – 00;23;10;11
Christi
It’s estimated that there were around $10 million worth of scenes. Nicks from the script for a $35 million budget, including an alternate ending for the couple and the florals for spring that saved the saved a bit.
00;23;10;11 – 00;23;22;15
Christi
so this is a 2006 film. It was the budget for this, like I said, was 35 million. It brought in domestically 124.7 million adjusted for today.
00;23;22;15 – 00;23;25;04
Christi
That’s like 205 million,
00;23;25;04 – 00;23;51;17
Christi
and worldwide, it brought in 325 million. IMDb score is 6.9 out of ten critics loved it at 75%. Audiences are just a smidge over that. At 76%, it’s an hour and 49 minutes. It’s rated PG 13, and it is listed as a comedy drama, and it is a 20th Century Fox film. It,
00;23;51;17 – 00;23;53;15
Christi
was nominated for two Oscars.
00;23;53;15 – 00;24;00;05
Christi
It got 21 wins and 53 nominations in total. So,
00;24;00;05 – 00;24;06;07
Christi
and this is a fan favorite. I would say that a lot of people, when you bring it up, enjoy this film.
00;24;06;10 – 00;24;07;20
Mike
Yeah, I think this is one.
00;24;07;20 – 00;24;11;28
Mike
yeah. I think one of the more popular films in there in that genre.
00;24;11;28 – 00;24;12;03
Mike
I
00;24;12;03 – 00;24;13;16
Christi
I enjoyed watching it again. How about you?
00;24;13;16 – 00;24;18;20
Christi
The second time around in such a short span of time?
00;24;18;22 – 00;24;23;07
Mike
Yeah, I did, I enjoyed watching it twice in the span of about a week. So,
00;24;23;07 – 00;24;25;10
Mike
it’s a good credit to it there. That’s a
00;24;25;10 – 00;24;25;29
Mike
fun film.
00;24;26;06 – 00;24;30;18
Christi
Cool. Let’s see what we’re going to watch next week.
00;24;30;20 – 00;24;35;03
Mike
Oh, wow. Speaking of introduction, this is the movie that introduced me to Anna Faris.
00;24;35;03 – 00;24;36;22
Mike
It’s House Bunny. I
00;24;36;22 – 00;24;38;10
Christi
I believe this is a,
00;24;38;10 – 00;24;40;17
Christi
pick from superfan RJ.
00;24;40;17 – 00;24;43;10
Mike
yes it is. Super fan RJ picked House Bunny for us.
00;24;43;11 – 00;24;55;06
Christi
Nice. So everybody enjoy the rest of your Sunday. If you need something to watch, watch House Bunny and join us next week where we will be talking about it. But never forget.
00;24;55;08 – 00;24;56;00
Mike
Dodges never stop.
00;24;56;00 – 00;24;57;25

And neither do the movies.
