Killdeer Is Picture Locked
It may seem like it has taken forever but Killdeer has achieved picture lock. We often say that you don’t ever finish a film but you just run out of time. Certainly, it has been a while since we wrapped principal photography. Also, I have another film in the can to edit and we’re in pre-production for a film next year. So, in that sense I’ve run out of time on this project.
But that isn’t to say that I’m leaving it unfinished. While I think any artist can get fiddling and tweaking infinitely, this film has reached the point where the amount of changes seem to be asymptotic. It doesn’t mean I’m giving up on changes (I just made one right now) but it feels like it’s time to send it to the next stage, which is sound design and scoring.
Because I’m looking at letting someone else tackle the sound design, this probably concludes my time as the major source of changes in post-production. It’s bittersweet in a way. For a long time, this film was the next in the pipeline. Then it was a daunting task awaiting me. For quite some time, it was my main editing task, always sitting there in need of my attention. Coming to a point where it moves to the next stage of its life has a touch of sadness like all endings. I will never be editing Killdeer again. I’m excited for the next steps for the film but in a kind of way this is a goodbye.
